Birthdays
It is funny how your birthday is a really big deal - especially when you're a kid. And once you hit, say 30, they're really not. Funny how we look forward to them so much under 30 and how we don't after.
My Mom used to make my favorite cake for my special day - angel food cake. And sometimes, she'd make it with an icing made from sugar and lemon - that was the best. (but be warned - one of the negatives of angel food cake is the yucky batter - don't try it - no matter how tempted - ever).
My Mom would let us pick out our meal for our day, too. I'd usually pick hot dogs. I know, I know - uncool - but nothing beats a good hot dog - no matter how old you are. Today, my meal of choice is crab - so I should be wearing a bib and whacking the shells with a hammer soon.
Most people are on a diet on my birthday. This is where the angel food cake is good, too. Of course, within a week or so, most people will have fallen off the diet bandwagon and wouldn't touch an angel food cake. Their loss.
January birthdays definitely have their pros and cons.
Pros:
You get what you didn't get for Christmas
There are still sales at the mall
You actually have something to look forward to in January
Cons:
You struggled making up a Christmas list, so you continue to do so in January
You get sheets or blankets as gifts from the white sales
It is the coldest day of the year and you only get 10 hours of daylight
Your Grandma sends you your birthday gift (socks) in the Christmas shipment - therefore, she doesn't really know what day your birthday is
I used to be, and am still envious, ok, jealous of people with birthdays in the Summer. It would be nice to just once have a pool party with hot dogs on the grill with watermelon and popsicles. Getting to wear flip flops and your bathing suit would be very cool, too. Of course, my husband tells me there is nothing stopping me from wearing my sandals and swimsuit tomorrow (on the coldest day in four years). Of course, HIS birthday is in May - cocky jerk.
My family has birthday rules, too: You have to send a card. And on time. And don't say you sent it 8 days ago - we look the envelope when it was mailed - to see if you're bullshitting. We also expect a phone call, too. You don't actually have to speak to each other - just leave a message. That does count. For some family members, we leave messages during the day when we know you are not at home. You know who you are.
And with the phone call - you get brownie points if you have young kids and you let them sing into the phone. Of course, there is nothing cuter than a 3 and 5 year old singing their hearts out to "Happy Birthday". This is also best during the day so you can leave it on the answering machine. Those of us without kids are screwed with this technique. Somehow, cats just won't sing when asked. (jerks)
So tomorrow - I'm expecting my obligatory cards and messages - and I'm also looking forward to them too. Once you hit a certain age - that is all that matters.
